BeTH LaDOVE, FOUNDER

For as long as I can remember, I've been a plant person. Obsessed with the rhythms and interconnections of the natural world, I've spent more than twenty-five years creating gardens and landscape experiences that balance the inherent character of the land with the human need for sanctuary. Whether I'm designing a garden or exploring more site-responsive artistic work, I’m always searching for the small, unfolding moments that make a place feel alive.

Gardens, for me, are about sensations, emotions, and the memories those moments create. A feeling of place, a fullness of being. Originally trained as a filmmaker and creative director, I try to bring atmosphere, movement, and the play of light into everything I make. A well-designed garden is so much more than a static image. It's a place where buds blossom and drop, where meals are shared, birds sing in the trees, shadows shift across walls, and the present stretches open into something richer and more grounded.

On every project, I respond to a site by trying to understand its true character and reflect that in place-driven, ecologically sensitive planting design. The essence of my work is in the subtle details—from leafy shadows on a wall to a romantic fragrance on a warm night—creating moods and contexts that are felt as much as they’re seen.

Equally important is understanding the values and aspirations of the people who live in these places. What moves you? What restores you? What inspires you to grow? Out of that collaborative inquiry, we create soulful, one-of-a-kind environments. My hope is that every landscape feels so “right” that it seems as if it has always been that way.

I work with like-minded clients in Mediterranean climates around the world on projects ranging from small residential terraces and courtyards to large rural estates. I’m also committed to community-based and educational work that explores how gardens can support connection, resilience, and belonging. I am developing a parallel body of site-responsive artistic work shaped by the same sensibilities—attention to place, ecology, and the emotional life of landscapes.

Alongside my design practice, I’ve been a published writer, university lecturer, and Master Gardener. In 2020, I co-founded and led Ground, a California home and garden store and community space. I sold the business in 2025, and the experience remains an important part of my engagement with plants and cultivated place, even as my practice continues to evolve.
